Comments From Our Car Safety Team Volunteers....
I very much enjoy being a Car Seat Safety volunteer. Working as a Child Restraint Technician allows me to perform preventative care for infants and children, as opposed to the reactionary first aid to which I am accustomed. To me, every seat I help a parent to install is one less child I have to treat as a medic. It is very gratifying to see the happiness on behalf of the parents we have helped, and knowing that their children leave our clinic safer than when they arrived. Injury prevention is one of the leading aims of St. John Ambulance, and this is finally one area where it is readily possible. The response from our "clients" has been nothing but positive, and the importance of this program is evidenced in the high call volume involving requests for inspections and installations.

When parents look to St. John Ambulance for the security of their most precious asset, I am proud to be part of such a valiant effort to help prevent injury or death to those who can't speak for themselves. There are very few opportunities where, at the end of the day, you can honestly say that you may have saved a life.

I have been assisting parents/caregivers with the installation of child restraints for more than 5 years now - first with the Peel Coalition for Injury Prevention and now with St. John Ambulance. As a volunteer, there is nothing more rewarding than the feeling at the end of a clinic that you have made a difference and perhaps saved a young one's life. The instructions that are given with child restraints are difficult to understand and you can hear on the telephone the frustration of those trying to do the right thing to keep their infant/child safe. The frustration is wonderfully changed to gratitude, smiles and relief when the parents/caregivers see the seat installed safely.

It brings me great pleasure and satisfaction knowing another child is safe in their car. That I can share vital information with the parents and I know they will share it with others! Maybe working together we can reduce injury and death to our children!
